The THC% Obsession Is Ruining Flower

Chasing a bigger number on the label has pushed a lot of growers to sacrifice the thing that actually matters: how it tastes and how it hits.

Debate

THC percentage became the marketing number because it's easy to print big on a label and easy for a buyer to compare at a glance. The problem is it's a genuinely poor predictor of how strong or how good a strain actually is — terpene profile and cannabinoid balance shape the real experience far more than one number does.

Chasing higher percentages has real costs. Some growers now flush and finish plants specifically to spike a lab result rather than to develop flavor, sacrificing the terp production that actually makes a strain worth buying twice. You end up with jars that test at 32% and smell like almost nothing.

There's also the open secret of lab shopping — sending the same batch to multiple labs and publishing whichever number comes back highest. It's an industry-wide inconsistency problem, and it means the number on your jar might reflect the lab's methodology as much as the plant itself.

My take: stop buying on the number. A well-cured 22% jar with a loud, complex nose will smoke better and hit harder than a flavorless 30% every time. If a shop leads with THC% before anything else, that's usually the tell that there isn't much else to sell you on.

Questions people actually ask

Does higher THC mean stronger weed?

Not reliably. THC percentage is a poor predictor of how strong or how good a strain is. Terpene profile and cannabinoid balance shape the experience far more than one number.

What is lab shopping?

Sending the same batch to multiple labs and publishing whichever number comes back highest. It means the number on your jar may reflect the lab's methods as much as the plant. (Rory's newer report covers New Jersey's investigation into it.)

Should you buy weed based on THC percentage?

No. A well-cured 22% jar with a loud, complex nose will smoke better and hit harder than a flavorless 30% one. If a shop leads with THC% before anything else, there usually isn't much else to sell you on.
