They legalized it. They promised social equity and a real craft market. This is me finding out what we actually got.

I'm not filming dispensary tours and calling it a documentary. Every episode starts with a real question about this industry, and I go find the answer myself — in grow rooms, in dispensaries, in living rooms, on camera, scoring flower on the same 3-Pillar system I use in every written review on this site. Nobody's handing me a conclusion to shoot around.

Six episodes, six questions, one throughline: where this industry actually came from, what's really in the product, why it costs what it costs, why outside money keeps showing up, who got left out of the "green rush," and whether the answer was in your own backyard the whole time. Watch them in order and it adds up to one story, not six unrelated videos.

The Premise

What is the State of Smoke in New Jersey?

New Jersey legalized cannabis on a promise — social equity, a real craft market, a shot for the people prohibition hurt most. I'm checking whether that promise actually got kept. I don't walk in pro-legal-market, pro-legacy-market, pro-corporate, or anti-government. I'm pro-consumer and pro-plant, and I follow whatever the evidence says, even when it's inconvenient for somebody.

The Structure

Every episode starts with a question, not a conclusion.

Question, investigation, people, evidence, experience, conclusion — every episode moves through all six before I land anywhere. I'm not writing the ending first and filming around it. Six episodes means six genuinely different investigations, not the same format wearing a different location each week.

The Standard

Sponsorship never decides a review.

I stay self-funded on whatever I'm formally reviewing, wherever that's possible. A brand or dispensary showing up on camera doesn't buy them a better look — same line between reviewer and marketer that's run through every review on this site since day one.

Six Episodes, Six Questions

Each episode stands on its own. Watched in order, they trace one arc — where this industry came from, what's actually in it, what it costs, who's cashing in, who got left out, and whether you could've been growing your own the whole time.

Episode 1

Where Did We Start?

Before dispensaries, before licenses, before any of this was legal, there was Greenleaf Compassion Center in Montclair — one of the state's first medical dispensaries, opened in 2012. Episode one starts there and traces the whole road from prohibition to medical to full legalization, through archival footage and the people who actually lived it.

Episode 2

What Goes Into the Plant?

Before you smoke it, something happened to it — a growing medium, pesticides or none, lab testing, a COA you've probably never actually read. Episode two is the consumer-science episode: what's really in your flower and how it got there. No health claims, just the evidence.

Episode 3

What's in the Price?

Same strain, three different prices at three different dispensaries — why? Episode three breaks down what actually drives cost in this market, then runs a blind taste test on aged and discounted inventory to answer the question everyone assumes but nobody's actually tested: does price track quality at all?

Episode 4

Why New Jersey?

Brands from other states keep showing up here with money and a playbook that wasn't built for New Jersey. Episode four is about what happens when that outside culture collides with the one that was already here — who adapts, who doesn't, and who the collision actually serves.

Episode 5

Who Got Left Behind?

Legalization was supposed to include the legacy market — the people who kept this industry alive before it was ever legal. Episode five sits down with people on every side of that tension, legacy growers, licensed operators, regulators, and lets each of them make their own case instead of picking a villain for them.

Episode 6

Who Grows the Best Weed?

Starts as exactly what it sounds like: a real flower competition to find the best grower in the state. Ends somewhere else — an argument that the real answer might be you, growing your own, and that residents deserve that choice regardless of who wins the trophy.
