Home Grow Should Be Legal Everywhere Cannabis Is

A number of states that legalized recreational cannabis sales still ban or heavily restrict home cultivation, arguing it's needed for tax revenue and product safety oversight. That argument gets weaker the longer legal markets mature — alcohol has coexisted with home brewing for decades without collapsing the beer industry.

The safety argument cuts both ways too: someone growing a few plants at home for personal use isn't a public health risk in the way untested illicit-market flower can be. Banning home grow doesn't stop people from growing quietly, it just removes any incentive to learn proper practices in the open.

My take: home grow limits exist mostly to protect market share for licensed retailers and cultivators, dressed up as a safety policy. If the tax and licensing structure is sound, a handful of home plants isn't a threat to it.

Growing your own also teaches you more about cure, flush, and trim than any amount of reading jars ever will — which, not coincidally, is exactly the kind of educated buyer that keeps sloppy brands honest.
