Live Rosin vs. Live Resin

“Live” means the plant material was frozen fresh at harvest instead of being dried and cured first. That fast-freeze locks in the volatile terpenes that would otherwise cook off during a normal dry/cure, which is why both live rosin and live resin tend to taste closer to the actual living plant than their non-live counterparts.

Live resin is solvent-based. Fresh-frozen material gets run through a solvent — usually butane or propane — which strips the cannabinoids and terpenes off the plant material. That solvent is then purged out with heat and vacuum. It's a faster, more scalable process, which is part of why live resin tends to be more affordable than live rosin.

Live rosin skips solvents entirely. The fresh-frozen material is first washed into bubble hash using ice water, then that hash is pressed with heat and pressure until the oil squeezes out. No solvent touches the product at any point, which is a big part of why rosin carries a premium — it's slower, more labor-intensive, and yields less per pound of starting material.

In practice: well-made resin and well-made rosin can be hard to tell apart blind. But rosin's solvent-free process is why purists gravitate toward it, and why an under-purged resin can occasionally carry a faint chemical edge that rosin simply can't have.
